    • Portrait Painting with Ferris Martinez

Join us for this online workshop as we dive into the genre of portraiture with San Francisco-based artist Ferris Martinez. This 3 part workshop aims to not only break down the process of rendering the human face into easily manageable segments, but to also explore the medium of oil paint itself, as well as how to best set up one’s art practice for success. Particular emphasis will be placed on the importance of embracing mistakes, encouraging experimentation, and - most importantly - building a practice that is consistently fun. This workshop is for all levels; whether you are new to oil paint and want to understand the basics of this vibrant medium, or just want to brush up on your portrait painting skills, this workshop is for you! Workshop Schedule: Saturday, September 5th, 1pm to 2:30pm Saturday, September 12th, 1pm to 2:30pm Saturday, September 19th, 1pm to 2:30pm Materials List: Oil paint colors Titanium white Ivory black Yellow ochre or burnt sienna A note about the above colors: if you do not have, or are unable to procure these colors, that is totally fine! What is most important is that you have a light color (white), a dark color (boack), and a color that is in the middle (yellow ochre). There is also no need to go out and get a large bottle of these colors - a small 38ml tube is more than enough. Brushes: Loew-Cornell Flathead 9 Loew-Cornell Flathead 5 Isabey-Special Round 5 Da Vinci Round 4 Da Vinci Round 2 Isabey-Special Flathead 1 A note about the above brushes: these are just the brushes I prefer using, but it does not mean you must have all or even some of these brushes before participating in this workshop. If you already have brushes that you enjoy using, then by all means please continue using those! Please also know that you do not need to get these exact brands - so long as you have at least 3 brushes that are around the sizes mentioned above, you will be good to go! - A roll of paper towels or a washcloth of some kind. I prefer using blue shop towels myself, but all you really need is some kind of cloth you wipe off excess paint. - Odorless Mineral Spirits. Gamsol (made by Gamblin) is the brand I prefer using. A 4.2 oz bottle is more than enough, but if you would like to get a larger bottle, by all means please do so. - Canvas or primed (gessoed) panel. I will be using a pre-gessoed canvas, likely one of these sizes: 8” x 10”, 9” x 12” or 11” x 14”. Over the course of this workshop I will use 1 to 3 pre-gessoed canvas.
